Special Events for 2016 Memorial Day Weekend at the National Museum of the Marine Corps

Triangle, VA - A visit to the National Museum of the Marine Corps is always a great way to spend some time on the weekend, but that's especially true during the Memorial Day holiday period, with special activities planned throughout the weekend.

"Take Me Home Huey," a sculpture created from the remains of a U.S. Army Huey helicopter, will be on display at the Museum from May 26-June 2, 2016. This multi-media art project by contemporary artist Steve Maloney was fashioned from Huey helicopter #174, found in an Arizona boneyard.  Maloney created the sculpture to draw attention to the sacrifices made by veterans and to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War.  It is his hope that the artwork will raise awareness of the veterans of all wars who are suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome.  On May 28, Maloney will be available to discuss his artwork and its mission.  Immediate family and relatives of some who served on Huey #174 when it was shot down in Vietnam will also be available to talk with visitors that day.

The "Marine Tribute Bike" that will be on display in Leatherneck Gallery during the holiday doesn't carry a brand name, rather "it is branded by love and loss."  The bike was custom-built by Lawrence Tremblay and his friends as a tribute to his fallen son, Cpl Joseph Tremblay, and his fellow warriors.

"The Marine Tribute Bike was built for one, dedicated to a few and in honor of all who have fallen defending our great nation," Tremblay says.  "I thought this would be a great monument to the son I so love and miss."

On May 29, there will be quite a few motorcycles at the Museum as the riders prepare to roll out in support of the Rolling Thunder demonstration.  Band of Brothers Motorcycle Club invites all riders to join them in the Museum's parking lot to form up for the ride to the Pentagon.  The Museum's parking lot will open at 6 a.m., Leatherneck Gallery opens at 6:15 a.m., and "thunder rolls" at 7:45 a.m.  Breakfast will be available.
