National Museum of the Marine Corps Ranked #2 Museum in the Country
Triangle, VA - The National Museum of the Marine Corps is the #2 museum in the country, according to reviewers on Yelp.com. NMMC consistently receives 5-star reviews on the popular site.
Yelp, which publishes crowd-sourced reviews of attractions and companies, created its list based on the number of reviews and overall ratings given to sites categorized as museums. NMMC reviewers are impressed with the Museum's inspiring exhibits and friendly and knowledgeable docents and staff, and they appreciated that it is free. "We are so very pleased that Yelp reviewers have given us such high marks, and we will continue to deliver the best visitor experience and customer service possible," said Director Lin Ezell.
"Amazing. The Marines do everything the right way. The museum is no different. A hall for each major conflict with an addition planned for Iraq & Afghanistan. Incredible displays...you could spend all day here & come back again & again. Visit while there are still vets from Iwo Jima & D-Day around to tell their story. Five stars is an understatement," according to a recent reviewer.
Construction has already begun on the Final Phase of the Museum. When finished, the additional 126,000 square feet will include historical galleries that tell Marine Corps history from 1976 to the present. It will also include a 350-seat large-format theater, Hall of Valor, art studio and gallery, children's gallery and Marine Corps Sports gallery, as well as a changing exhibits gallery. These new areas will open in over a 4-year period beginning in 2017, with the Medal of Honor Theater, Hall of Valor, art gallery and children's area opening first. The historical galleries will open in 2018.
The Museum will be closed Jan 4, 2016 though the end of March. The closure will allow two new aircraft to be added to Leatherneck Gallery. A recently restored World War II SBD Dauntless dive bomber will be hung from the ceiling of the central gallery, while a new tableau featuring a Vietnam-era Sikorsky UH-34D helicopter will also be installed on the floor.
The National Museum of the Marine Corps is located at 18900 Jefferson Davis Highway in Triangle, VA. and is open 9:00 am - 5:00 pm daily except Christmas Day. Admission and parking are free. For more information, please call 703 784-6107 or visit the Museum's website at www.usmcmuseum.org
