Motivated and Dependable Interns Needed at the National Museum of the Marine Corps

The National Museum of the Marine Corps needs a few good interns.  Undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to apply before 5:00 PM on Friday, April 2, 2010.  Selections will be made in mid-April and selectees will be notified shortly thereafter.

You can earn money, skills, and resume bullets while learning something new.  Some colleges will apply course credit toward specific projects – check with your professor.

We can accommodate flexible schedules.  Several interns work during the summer, others work during the Spring and Fall semesters.  The stipend is $8.00 per hour.

Current needs include:

Art Collection.  Work with curators and thousands of original drawings, paintings, and sculptures.  Work focuses on inventory, art handling, and database entry.  The work week is Monday through Friday.

Curatorial Services.  Work with curators and historical artifacts.  Work focuses on inventory, artifact handling and storage, condition reports, and database entry.  Specific collections include the General Collection, Aviation, Ordnance, and Uniforms and Heraldry.  The work week is Monday through Friday.

Education.  Work with educators and the Teacher in Residence as they host educational groups and conduct educational events.  Gain hands-on experience working with students, parents, and practicing educators.  The educational program frequently involves work on weekends and holidays.

Exhibits.  Work with exhibit specialists to file electronic drawings and maintain the physical exhibits.  If you show artistic potential, you may be able to assist with the creation of models and drawings needed to produce exhibits.  The work week is Monday through Friday.  Computer skills are a must.

Public Affairs.  Gain experience in business communications and marketing.  Assist with distributing rack cards, writing press releases, special events and maintaining contact files.  The work week is generally Monday through Friday but could include some evenings and weekends.

Restoration.  Gain hands-on experience working on large artifacts with highly skilled restoration specialists.  Work involves disassembly, sandblasting, research, and reassembly (if you stay here long enough).  Tuesday through Saturday, 0600 to 1430.  You can get an early start and beat the traffic.

Visitor Services.  Help to meet and greet thousands of museum visitors, organize special events, and develop and organize docent learning materials.  The work week is Sunday through Saturday.
